The 2024 internet speed rankings expose the depth of Africa’s connectivity divide, with Sudan emerging as the continent’s slowest, recording an average download speed of just 4.02 mbps. This makes everyday digital activities like video streaming, online learning, and remote work out of reach for large parts of the population.
Just above Sudan is the Central African Republic, with a speed of 4.08 mbps. Ethiopia (4.45 mbps), Eritrea (4.61 mbps), and Niger (4.97 mbps) also struggled to cross the 5 mbps mark. Even though it's at the top of this bottom 10 list, Somalia’s 6.64 mbps is far below international averages, which often exceed 50 Mbps.
These findings come from BestBroadbandDeals.co.uk, which collated and analysed over 1.5 billion speed tests across 229 countries and territories in the 12 months ending June 2024. The vast dataset provides one of the clearest pictures yet of the global broadband divide, with Africa’s weakest performers concentrated in its central and eastern regions.
