Côte d'Ivoire has dominated the world’s cocoa production since 1977, displacing Ghana
Until 1976, Ghana was the world’s largest cocoa producer, with an average annual output of 410,000 tonnes. However, Ghana lost this lead when production fell to 277,000 tonnes in 1997, allowing Côte d'Ivoire and Brazil to overtake. Since 1977, Côte d'Ivoire has led global cocoa production, increasing its output by 634%. Nigeria’s cocoa production peaked at 485,000 tonnes in 2006, consistently ranking among the top ten producers.

Libya, Seychelles, Equatorial Guinea, and South Africa have dominated Africa’s GDP per capita rankings since 1960

Africa’s productivity leaders: Libya gets the most value from each workhour
In 2023, Libya led Africa in labour productivity, generating $29.7 per hour worked. Gabon and Mauritius followed at $25.6 and $25.5. Meanwhile, Nigeria's workers generated $6.8 per hour, and Burundi recorded the lowest at $0.8. Globally, Luxembourg and Ireland topped the list with $146 and $143 per hour, showcasing the efficiency and quality of human capital in these economies.

Angola has secured 25% of Chinese loans to Africa since 2000
Between 2000 and 2023, Africa received $182 billion in Chinese loans, primarily for energy and transportation development. Angola, with 25%, was the largest recipient; Ethiopia, Egypt, Nigeria, and Kenya followed. While 49 countries benefited, experts warn of increasing debt risks.

7 of the top 10 countries with the highest unmet need for contraception are African
On #WorldContraceptionDay, it's vital to highlight that in 2023, many women and girls aged 15 to 49 globally still have unmet contraceptive needs. Samoa (28%), Angola (27%), and Liberia (25%) are among the top 10 countries. Notably, seven of the top 10 are African, underscoring the urgent need for better reproductive health services.

Only 3 African countries had 100% access to electricity as of 2021
Only 8% of South Sudan's population had access to electricity as of 2021, representing Africa's lowest percentage. Although eight countries boasted between 90% and 100% access to electricity, more than 50% of the population of 24 other countries were without electricity.

Africa's top oil-producing countries by capacity as of June 2021

Angola has received 27% of all Chinese loans to African countries since 2000
Data from the Boston University Global Development Policy Center shows that Chinese creditors have loaned African countries $167 billion since 2000, with Angola receiving 27% ($45 billion) of the amount. Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia, and Egypt complete the top five.
