Since the 1950s, the top sources of international students in the US have changed, with Canada initially leading, followed by Iran in the 1970s, Taiwan and Japan in the 1980s and 90s, and China and India taking the lead from the 2000s onward. China and India account for a combined 54% of the total international students in the US as of the 2023/2024 academic year. By 2021, Nigeria entered the top ten, reaching 7th place by 2024.

The UK led Nigeria’s capital imports in H1 2024, contributing nearly 50% of total inflows
In H1 2024, the UK accounted for nearly half (48.9%) of Nigeria’s capital investments, totalling $2.93 billion, followed by South Africa (14%) and the Netherlands (11%). This highlights the UK's long-standing economic ties with Nigeria, having invested over $47.5 billion over the past ten years. The UK remains Nigeria's top capital import source.

The UK has approved 6.4 million study visas to foreign nationals between 2005 and 2023
Since 2005, nationals from China, India, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Pakistan, and Nigeria have ranked among the top three recipients of UK study visas. China led the list from 2010 to 2020. In 19 years, over 1.46 million Chinese nationals (22.9% of the total) received study visas. India followed with 926.9k and Nigeria — which first entered the top three in 2020 — with 436.9k.

Nigerian learners enroled in STEM courses on Coursera doubled year-on-year as of March 2023
Although Nigeria had the third highest number of learners on Coursera enroled in courses related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as of March 2023, the country had the highest year-on-year increase — almost double. Five African countries were in the top ten increasing STEM learners on the e-learning platform.
