Rwanda tops SSA for 3rd consecutive year in Rule of Law Index 2024; Nigeria Ranks 23rd of 34 countries
Rwanda is performing relatively well in terms of governance and rule of law, leading sub-Saharan Africa for the third consecutive year with a score of 0.63 in the 2024 Rule of Law Index. Namibia (0.61) and Mauritius (0.60) closely follow, showcasing relatively stronger legal frameworks. At the lower end, Nigeria, Congo, and Gabon score 0.40, highlighting persistent governance challenges. Globally, Denmark tops the list of 142 countries, with a score of 0.90, while Venezuela ranks last at 0.26, emphasising the gap between SSA's highest performers and global leaders. This mix of progress and struggles illustrates the varied state of governance across the region.

Africa’s rice giants: Nigeria, Egypt, and Madagascar have led production since 1961
From 1961 to 2022, Nigeria, Egypt, and Madagascar led Africa in rice production, supporting local economies and food security. Nigeria peaked in 2017 with over 10 million tonnes, while Egypt and Madagascar also recorded strong years. Since 2014, Nigeria has held the title of Africa's largest rice producer.

Africa’s World Bank debt reached $125 billion in 2022: Which country owes the most?
As of 2022, the top five African countries indebted to the World Bank — Nigeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania — accounted for 46% of the continent's outstanding debt with the institution. Forty-eight African countries collectively owed around $125 billion, representing 31% of the total global debt of $408 billion. These are the top ten countries from 1970 to 2022.

How Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Colombia overtook Nigeria in palm oil production
Nigeria was once a global leader in palm oil production, but it has been overtaken by Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Colombia. Indonesia, in particular, has seen a 34,018% increase in production since 1961, reaching 49.7 million tonnes by 2021.

South Africa's export value in 2023 was almost double Nigeria's
In 2023, South Africa led Africa's exports with a value of $110.7 billion, nearly double Nigeria's $60.7 billion. Key exports include gems, vehicles, and mineral fuels. The top 15 African exporters contribute 84% to the continent's trade, with South Africa, Nigeria, Algeria, Morocco, and Egypt leading with a combined 52%.

Cote d'Ivoire produced 73% of Africa's natural rubber production in 2022
Côte d'Ivoire has maintained its title of Africa's largest producer of natural rubber, increasing production by an average of 13% annually. Nigeria was Africa's largest producer of natural rubber in the early 90s until Côte d'Ivoire took the top spot in 1999. As of 2022, its production capacity was 8.6x more than Nigeria's. In 2022, Côte d'Ivoire produced 1.286 million tonnes of natural rubber; Nigeria and Ghana followed with 149.4 thousand tonnes and 117 thousand tonnes, respectively.

Nigeria is the 11th happiest country of 40 African countries surveyed as of 2024 and 102nd in the world
Nigeria has ranked the 102nd happiest country of 143 countries surveyed globally as of 2024; it ranked 11th of 40 African countries.​ ​​ ​Libya ranked 66th globally and 1st in Africa, followed by Mauritius and South Africa in 70th and 83rd positions, respectively. The World Happiness Report ranks happiness based on GDP per capita, life expectancy, generosity, social support, freedom, and corruption.

Only 3 African countries had 100% access to electricity as of 2021
Only 8% of South Sudan's population had access to electricity as of 2021, representing Africa's lowest percentage. Although eight countries boasted between 90% and 100% access to electricity, more than 50% of the population of 24 other countries were without electricity.

Eleven of the top fourteen diamond-producing countries in 2022 are Africa
African countries dominated the list of top diamond producers, with 11 of them among the top 14 in 2022. Russia tops the list with a production of 41.9 million carats, followed by Botswana, which produced 24.5 million carats. Here are the top diamond-producing countries in 2022.

Angola has received 27% of all Chinese loans to African countries since 2000
Data from the Boston University Global Development Policy Center shows that Chinese creditors have loaned African countries $167 billion since 2000, with Angola receiving 27% ($45 billion) of the amount. Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia, and Egypt complete the top five.
