Only five of the 21 political parties in Nigeria in 2026 have governorship representation, with the All Progressives Congress now controlling a large majority of state governments.
As of March 15, 2026, 31 of Nigeria’s 36 state governors belong to the APC, representing about 86.1% of all governors in the country.
A notable driver of this overwhelming presence has been the steady movement of governors from other political parties to the APC. Over time, defections have reshaped the political balance at the state level, gradually expanding the party’s reach across multiple regions. As governors switched affiliations, the APC’s footprint widened, leaving only a handful of states under other parties.
