The cost of eating healthy in Nigeria surged sharply in 2024. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the national average Cost of Healthy Diet (CoHD) rose by over 74%, from ₦858 in January to ₦1,495 in December. This means the minimum daily cost required for an individual to meet recommended nutritional standards almost doubled within a year — underscoring how inflation and rising food prices are squeezing household nutrition choices.
The most notable jump occurred in June 2024, when the CoHD increased by 19.2% in a single month, climbing from ₦1,041 in May to ₦1,241. Monthly increases remained relatively moderate afterwards, but the trend stayed upward throughout the year. This steady rise reflects persistent food price pressures despite policy efforts to stabilise markets and boost food supply.
