Founded in 2016 by Douglas Kendyson, Selar was built to address the payment friction faced by African creators selling digital products. By simplifying cross-border transactions, the platform has become a major revenue stream for the continent's digital entrepreneurs.
Total payouts grew from ₦807.2 million in 2021 to ₦18 billion in 2024 — a 22x increase in just five years. This trajectory is highlighted by a sharp jump between 2023 and 2024, when payouts more than doubled, signalling a significant shift in platform adoption and revenue generation.
This financial growth closely mirrors the expansion of the user base, which grew from 20,000 to 400,000 creators in the same period.
