Lagos State residents are paying the highest average intra-city transport fares in Nigeria, at ₦1,384 per trip, which exceeds the national average of ₦1,028 by over ₦355. This highlights the cost burden of urban transportation in Nigeria’s commercial capital—a city where high population density, traffic congestion, and fuel-related expenses continually push up commuting costs. Abia State recorded the lowest average bus fare at ₦508, less than half of Lagos’ average. The sharp contrast between these states highlights how local economic realities, including fuel availability, transportation demand, and the overall cost of living, influence transportation costs.
