Over the past 50 years, Ogun State has transformed from a Lagos-adjacent hinterland into one of Nigeria’s leading industrial hubs. Key infrastructure, including the Agbara Industrial Estate (1982) and Oyan River Dam (1983), laid the foundation for industrial and population growth; large-scale limestone exploitation fuelled cement production.
The construction of the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport began in 2021 and expanded the state’s logistics and export capacity. Also referred to as Gateway International Airport for commercial passenger flights, it became fully operational locally in 2025. Population surges confirmed by the 2006 census reflect migration driven by industrial and economic opportunities, cementing Ogun’s role as a manufacturing and logistics gateway to Lagos and beyond.
