Africa has a minimal presence among the world’s elite military powers. Of the global top 20, only Egypt and Algeria represent the continent, underscoring how concentrated top-tier military capability remains globally.
While dominant powers like the United States, Russia, and China sit far ahead with near-perfect scores, the gap between them and most African countries is wide and persistent.
Egypt leads Africa’s global standing with a power index score of 0.3427, followed by Algeria at 0.3589. Their inclusion in the global top 20 signals long-term investments in defence infrastructure, manpower, and equipment.
However, the fact that no other African country breaks into this bracket reinforces how exceptional these cases are.
