In 2000, the average diesel price in the United States was about $1.50 per gallon. At the beginning of 2008, it reached over $4.70 per gallon, influenced by geopolitical tensions and rising crude oil costs. By late December 2024, it had stabilised at around $3.50 per gallon.

Here’s a detailed table summarising the trends in the price of diesel from 2000-2024:

PeriodGlobal Average Price per Gallon (USD)Key Influences

2000–2005: Stabilisation and growth

U.S. diesel fuel price rose from $1.356 per gallon in January 2000 to $2.443 in December 2005. Global demand increased due to the industrialisation of China and India.

China's oil consumption increased from 88 million tons in 1980 to 187 million tons in 2005. India's net oil imports totalled about 1.6 million barrels daily in 2003. China accounted for 36% of the world's increase in oil demand in 2003, and the U.S. accounted for 27%.

2006–2010: Peak and decline

Diesel prices peaked at $4.703 per gallon in 2008, mirroring crude oil's peak of $145.31 per barrel. By the end of 2009, they had fallen by around 30%, from $3.308 to $2.292.

The global economic crisis induced a 10.3% decline in actual manufacturing output between 2007 and 2009, while crude oil prices had previously risen to $79 per barrel in mid-2006, $90.02 by October 2007, and over $100 by January 2008.

2011–2015: High prices and supply adjustments

Diesel fuel prices ranged from $3.00 to $4.00 per gallon on average. From 2010 through 2019, the United States’ shale oil production increased to over 7 million barrels per day.

Diesel fuel prices fell from $3.964 in April 2014 to $2.310 in December 2015, a decrease of 42%. North Dakota’s GDP growth rate was 4.5 times the U.S. rate, and Texas’ was 1.5 times the U.S. rate.

2016–2020: Stabilisation and pandemic impact

Diesel fuel prices ranged between $2.00 and $3.50 per gallon. The U.S. petroleum product supply fell by 3.4 million barrels per day in 2020, and diesel prices fell by over 20% from January to May 2020.

At the end of 2020, prices averaged $2.59 per gallon, down from $3.048 in January. The transportation sector used 80% of U.S. diesel fuel and was particularly hard hit.

2021–2024: Recovery and geopolitical influences

The U.S.’ demand for distillate fuel increased from 4.0 million barrels per day in 2021 to 4.1 million in 2022. Diesel fuel averaged $4.23 per gallon in 2023 and was predicted to drop to $3.70 per gallon in 2024.

Global biofuel demand was expected to increase by 6% from 2022 to 2024. However, the war between Russia and Ukraine caused global fuel prices to increase by 20% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Conclusion

Over the past two decades, diesel prices have significantly fluctuated in response to various factors, from geopolitical tensions to economic downturns and global health crises.
