Based on information from Comité Champagne, 42 African nations imported 5.1 million 75cl bottles of champagne in 2022 for a total of €134.8 million. These figures are impressive, but they are still dwarfed by those from other continents, with Europe leading with 94 million bottles, followed by the Americas with 42 million, Asia with 28 million, and Oceania with 11.4 million.
South Africa, Nigeria, and Côte d'Ivoire stood out because they were responsible for 50% of the continent's imports. South Africa was the top importer of these three countries, receiving an astounding 1.34 million bottles in 2022, accounting for an astonishing 26% of champagne coming into Africa.
A staggering 99.99% of Southern Africa's champagne import requests originated in South Africa, demonstrating the country's unquestionable control of the market.
