Nigeria’s 2026 defence budget is small compared with the world’s biggest military spenders. At about $3.9 billion, it equals just 0.5% of the US’ allocated $831.5 billion. Even compared with other major powers such as China ($303 billion) and Russia ($212.6 billion), Nigeria’s allocation represents only a tiny fraction of their allocations.
Nigeria’s entire defence budget is just 1.3% of China’s, 3.6% of India’s, and 6.8% of Australia’s. In absolute terms, several countries spend more in a single week than Nigeria allocates for the entire year. This contrast underscores how global military capacity is shaped not only by strategy and manpower, but by the scale of financial commitment.
