Political power in Nigeria has shifted over time, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerging as the overwhelmingly dominant force among state governors. There is a steady rise in APC-controlled states — from 19 governors in 2019 to 20 in 2023, and then a sharp jump to 26 governors by December 2025. These controls stem from both the electoral process and defections from one party to another.
On the other hand, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), once a major powerhouse, experienced a steep decline. PDP’s governorship numbers fell from 16 in 2019 to 13 in 2023 and dropped to six governors in 2025, marking one of the party’s most significant losses in modern political history.
